Valley View football advances to the Division 10 quarterfinal

MORENO VALLEY — Justin Keeling kept piling up yards, and touchdowns, for defending Southern Section champion Valley View High School.

Eagles’ QB Jake Barlage kept finding Robert Heiermann on deep throw downfield.

Visiting Pacifica’s second round duel figured to be a shootout. But when Valley View slowed down the Mariners’ attack in the second quarter, the Eagles surged to a 59-27 Southern Section Division 10 playoff win on Friday night.

Keeling scored five touchdowns, racked up 264 yards and watched Barlage (15 completions, 207 yards) connect with Heiermann (11 receptions, 125 yards) on a pair of TD passes to land the Eagles (9-3) in next week’s semifinals at Goleta Dos Pueblos.

Lost, perhaps, in Valley View’s scoring surge might have been a pair of Eagle defensive stands against the high-powered Mariners’ attack, led mainly by their QB, Ben Jefferson (256 yards passing, 73 rushing).

On his fourth-and-goal option pitch to Rai Sagastume, a trio of Eagles flocked to the play, led mainly by Quinzon Martin. While Pacifica’s sideline argued that he cracked the goal line, referees ruled he was out of bounds at the 1-yard-line.

Trailing 21-13, Pacifica regained possession, Jefferson and Sagastune alternating carries to the 11 where the Mariners faced 3rd-and-5.

Valley View’s Donzell Alexander burst in for the first of his two QB sacks on Jefferson, forcing a fourth-and-13 pass that fell incomplete.

When Keeling snuck through Pacifica’s defensive line for a 66-yard TD run, the score gave Valley View a 28-13 halftime lead.

Sagastume’s 15-yard run answered the Burlage-to-Heiermann 10-yard TD in the third quarter, but Valley View placekicker Ricardo Chavez gave the Eagles a 38-20 lead with a 42-yard field goal.

Jefferson cut into that led with a 7-yard TD pass to Bobby Santos (9 catches, 90 yards), but Keeling’s 54-yard run, a 1-yard run by Rudy Lovato and another Keeling 17-yarder sealed Valley View’s trip to the semifinals.

Dos Pueblos (11-1) edged Gahr, 35-28, to set up next week’s showdown with the Eagles.
