Gang member charged with robbery, other offenses after sheriff’s raid in Jurupa Valley

RIVERSIDE — A 22-year-old documented gang member and ex-convict accused of robbing a Jurupa Valley business and arming himself with a high-capacity semiautomatic pistol was charged Wednesday with multiple felony offenses.

James Joseph Ysais was arrested Friday during a Riverside County sheriff’s raid on a residence in the 1000 block of 50th Street in Jurupa Valley.

Ysais made his initial court appearance before a Superior Court judge, who appointed him a public defender and scheduled his arraignment for May 30 at the Riverside Hall of Justice.

Ysais was being held in lieu of $1 million bail at the Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta.

According to sheriff’s Sgt. Frank Lodes, Ysais allegedly confronted several people in the 10000 block of Palomino Drive last Thursday, brandishing a firearm at the victims but not shooting. The circumstances were not specified.

Ysais left the location and eluded deputies, Lodes alleged. However, witnesses identified Ysais as the alleged perpetrator.

In the ensuing investigation, detectives tied Ysais to an armed robbery on May 2 in Jurupa Valley and began developing leads on his possible whereabouts, according to Lodes.

Ysais was soon traced to the 50th Street address, and sheriff’s anti-gang personnel executed a search warrant at the residence, where they allegedly seized a machine-gun style semiautomatic handgun, ammunition, high-capacity magazines and methamphetamine, Lodes said.

Ysais was taken into custody without a struggle.

According to court records, Ysais has prior convictions for assault with a firearm, assault resulting in great bodily injury and street gang activity.
