Corona man killed in golf cart crash at Vail Lake Resort

A Corona resident was killed in a golf cart crash east of Temecula on Thursday. The man was identified Saturday as Mauricio Murillo, 38.

Murillo and an unidentified resident of Chino were driving a “lifted” off-road golf cart about 10:15 p.m. on Thursday, July 26 in the campground area of the Vail Lake Resort, just off Highway 79, when the driver drove off the paved road and through a vacant campground, the California Highway Patrol said.

The cart overturned when it went off an embankment that “becomes increasingly steep and uneven as it descends,” ejecting both men, the CHP said.

Murillo was pronounced dead at the scene and the 37-year-old Chino man was taken to Inland Valley Hospital with major injuries.

Investigators thus far have not determined who the driver was, but the CHP said alcohol was likely a factor in the crash and that the men were not wearing safety equipment.
