7-week-old baby boy killed in Yucaipa rollover crash; driver accused of DUI

A seven-week-old boy died two days after the infant was ejected from a vehicle when it crashed and overturned near the 10 Freeway and Wabash Avenue in Yucaipa, officials said.

The driver of the vehicle, Joey Joseph, 25, was arrested and charged on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and cruelty to a child resulting in death. He pleaded not guilty to all charges Thursday, Aug. 2, court records show.

On the afternoon of Tuesday, July 31, Joseph was traveling west on 10 Freeway west of Wabash Avenue when his 2003 Honda Civic came off the roadway, down a dirt embankment and struck a concrete culvert causing the vehicle to roll several times, according to California Highway Patrol.

Passengers Ysenia Santana and the infant were ejected. Authorities said neither were restrained.

Paramedics took the pair and the child to Loma Linda University Medical center where the child died Thursday, officials said.

Joseph was evaluated and subsequently arrested, officials said.

Joseph is scheduled to be back in court Aug. 10. He is being held at Glen Helen Rehabilitation Center in Devore in lieu of $100,000 bail.
