McCain Foods to close Colton processing plant, laying off 100

McCain Foods will close its production plant in Colton, laying off about 100 workers.

The processing facility produces roasted, caramelized and sauteed frozen fruits and vegetables, which are sold under a variety of brands. McCain Foods is based in Toronto, Canada, and has operations around the world.

The company announced the closure in a statement but did not give a reason or a date it would shutter. A company spokesperson did not respond to requests for more information.

As of Jan. 9, the layoffs were not listed on the website of the California Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act. Companies who lay off large numbers of employees are required to notify the state 60 days before the layoffs take place.

McCain CEO Jeff DeLapp said in a statement that “all of our employees will be treated fairly and respectfully,” and that the customer demands are evolving. McCain still has American production facilities in Idaho, Maine, Nebraska, Washington and Wisconsin. McCain Foods USA is based in Oakbrook Terrace, Ill.

Last April the company laid off 84 workers at Monroe, N.C. plant. Other layoffs affected 119 workers in Fort Atkinson, Wis., in 2015, and 121 in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island in 2014.

Also, the Colton facility in October 2018 was the center of a recall of all the food products manufactured there, under threat of possible salmonella and listeria contamination. It was not known if anyone was sickened by the products, or whether the recall was connected to the shutdown of the factory.
