Investigators seek to ID suspect in attempted abduction of girl in Riverside County’s Home Gardens area

CORONA  — A man who attempted to grab a girl walking home from school near Corona remained at large Tuesday, and authorities sought the public’s help in identifying him.

The attempted kidnapping happened about 4:30 p.m. last Friday in the 3900 block of Buchanan Street, near the Riverside (91) Freeway, in the unincorporated community of Home Gardens, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Sgt. Ed Soto said the victim was heading to her residence when the suspect, parked in a black older-model Toyota sedan, whistled and motioned for her to come over to his car.

The child approached the car, and the man asked her for directions to the very spot where his Toyota was sitting, according to Soto.

“Without warning, the subject reached across his right front passenger seat and grabbed the student’s right arm in an attempt to pull her inside of his vehicle,” the sergeant said. “The student immediately pulled away, breaking free of his grasp, (and) ran away from the location.”

The girl told deputies that the driver started his car and sped away in the opposite direction. She was not injured.

The suspect was described as Hispanic, in his mid to late 40s, clean shaven and wearing an orange T-shirt, possibly a work garment similar to that worn by members of road crews or construction personnel, and blue jeans.

Anyone with information was asked to contact the sheriff’s Jurupa Valley station at (951) 955-2600.
