San Bernardino County Supervisor Robert Lovingood will not seek re-election

Supervisor Robert Lovingood will not seek re-election in 2020.

With less than a year and a half left in his term, Lovingood, 62, made the announcement Friday, Aug. 23, in a news release to his constituents in the 1st District, which includes the High Desert cities of Victorville, Hesperia, Adelanto, Needles and the town of Apple Valley.

“The decision has been a very difficult one, as I have truly enjoyed serving you as First District Supervisor for the past seven years,” said Lovingood, who was first elected in 2012 then re-elected in 2016.

While supervisor, Lovingood said the “Made in the High Desert” Manufacturing Summit and Veterans Resource Fair are among is proudest endeavors.

“Both of these annual events have allowed us to serve our local residents by connecting them to resources within the county,” he said. “Our young people have been amazed at the diverse job opportunities available to consider and our veterans have gained helpful information about benefits, claims assistance, and job opportunities.”

Lovingood, an advocate for job and business growth in the district, has supported several initiatives with the Workforce Development Board, including Vision2Suceed and GenerationGo!. A technical training center is in the process of being established in the High Desert.

Other accomplishments listed by Lovingood include his office’s work with the District Attorney’s office to address Welfare and Workers Compensation Fraud; getting numerous road and infrastructure improvements; helping connect residents with county resources; and partnering with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and Code Enforcement to have inmates assist with clearing trash and tires to address illegal dumping in some desert areas.

“Although I will no longer be serving as a County Supervisor after November 2020, I plan to stay actively involved as a business and community member,” he said. “I am committed to ensure that our District receives the best education and economic opportunities possible and will continue to advocate for the growth of jobs in our region.”

Lovingood’s announcement means the 1st District seat will be an open race in 2020. The 5th District seat is also open, with Supervisor Josie Gonzales terming out. The 3rd District seat, currently held by appointed Supervisor Dawn Rowe, will also be on the ballot.
