Morongo powwow returns this weekend for 29th year



About 900 dancers, singers and performers will appear this weekend at the 29th Annual Morongo Thunder & Lightning Powwow.

The event is set for Friday, Sept. 27, through Sunday, Sept. 29, next to the Morongo Casino Resort & Spa and is hosted by the Morongo Band of Mission Indians.

The free event will celebrate Native American culture and feature dancing, music and art, a  news release states. A Grand Entry is set for each of the three days and includes a parade of hundreds of dancers in traditional dress and the music of competitive drum groups and singers.

Guests can also see bird singing and Native American drummers and dancers from across North America and Canada, the release states. Vendors will be selling food, Native American jewelry, pottery, clothing and baskets.

The powwow and Indian market is scheduled for Friday Sept. 27, 4 p.m. to midnight; Saturday, Sept. 28, 10 a.m. to midnight; and Sunday, Sept. 29, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Color Guard and Grand Entry can be viewed at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The Morongo Casino Resort & Spa is at 49500 Seminole Drive, near Cabazon.
