Officers hunting for man who stole undercover Corona police car

Police were swarming an apartment complex near La Sierra High in Riverside on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 9, hunting for a man who they say stole a Corona police car on the 91 Freeway.

The incident happened at about 2 p.m. A person stole an unmarked police vehicle on the westbound 91 near Van Buren Boulevard in Riverside, said Officer Ryan Railsback, a Riverside Police Department spokesman.

Shots were fired — Railsback didn’t know who fired them — but no one was reported injured. It was unclear how the person gained control of the police vehicle.

The suspect left his car behind. He then drove into the La Sierra neighborhood, where he was last seen near an apartment complex, Railsback said.
