UCLA football hires Ryan Gunderson as quarterback coach

UCLA hired San Jose State quarterback coach Ryan Gunderson for the same position Friday.

The Bruins’ football program filled the vacancy a week after Dana Bible, who spent three seasons on coach Chip Kelly’s staff, announced his retirement.

Gunderson joined the Spartans’ coaching staff in 2017 as quarterbacks coach before his role expanded to passing game coordinator in 2018.

He was a 2019 nominee for the Broyles Award, honoring college football’s top assistant coaches. Quarterback Josh Love finished third in the nation with 326.9 passing yards per game and seventh in passing yards with 3,923 yards under Gunderson’s guidance that season.

Gunderson has Pac-12 Conference experience as a player and coach at Oregon State.

He was a quarterback for the Beavers from 2003-07 before becoming a graduate assistant coach in 2008.

Gunderson will lead a quarterback room that includes three-year starter Dorian Thompson-Robinson, backup Chase Griffin and incoming transfer Ethan Garbers.
