Boy with gun, 15, arrested on Moreno Valley High School campus

A 15-year-old boy was arrested Tuesday, Aug. 17, for allegedly carrying a loaded handgun onto the Moreno Valley High School campus.

The student, whose name was not released due to his age, was taken into custody about 10:30 a.m. and booked into Riverside Juvenile Hall on suspicion of illegal possession of a firearm and bringing a gun onto school grounds.

According to Riverside County sheriff’s Sgt. Julio De Leon, school resource officers were alerted by unnamed witnesses, prompting an investigation that involved school administrators. The boy was quickly apprehended, without students and staff being placed in harm’s way, De Leon said.

There was no word on whether the campus, which opened for full-time, in-person instruction last week, was locked down at any time. It was also unclear how the youth had obtained the gun, or what he planned to do with it.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information was asked to contact the sheriff’s Moreno Valley station at 951-486-6700.
