Whittier resident pleads guilty to manslaughter in shooting death of Rancho Cucamonga man

NORWALK — A 35-year-old man pleaded guilty Wednesday to voluntary manslaughter for a shooting last year in Whittier that left a San Bernardino County man dead.

Peter Vidal Hernandez of Whittier also admitted a gun use allegation involving the Sept. 8, 2017, killing of Austin Jimenez, according to Ricardo Santiago of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Hernandez and Jimenez had been heard arguing before the shooting, which occurred about 3:15 a.m. in the 12800 block of Penn Street.

Hernandez — who was on foot — fired at the back of the vehicle containing Jimenez as the car pulled away, according to Whittier police.

The 28-year-old Rancho Cucamonga man was pronounced dead in a parking lot in the 2500 block of East Workman Avenue in West Covina. Jimenez’s companions drove him to the parking lot after the shooting and called for help, police said.

Hernandez, who was arrested 20 days later, is facing a 21-year state prison term, with sentencing set for Feb. 13 at the Norwalk courthouse.
