1 in 4 are testing positive for coronavirus in San Bernardino County



Nearly one in four San Bernardino County residents tested for the novel coronavirus in the week ending Dec. 19 were infected, the highest test-positivity rate in the state, data released Tuesday, Dec. 29, show.

One in five people returned positive results in the week ending Dec. 5.

At 26.8%, the county also has the highest test-positivity rate in socioeconomically disadvantaged communities. Neighboring Riverside County’s 25.7% figure is second-highest.

Over the weekend, December became San Bernardino County’s deadliest month of the pandemic, as deaths topped the reported total of 307 in August.

One new death was reported Tuesday, bringing the total number of deaths in December so far to 309.

San Bernardino County public health officials reported 6,133 new confirmed cases Tuesday, as cumulative cases surpassed 190,000.

A record 1,738 COVID patients were in county hospitals as of Monday, 83 more than the day prior.

On Tuesday, with intensive care unit capacity in Southern California holding at 0%, state public health officials announced the stay-at-home order will stay in place.

Here are the latest numbers, according to county and state public health officials.

San Bernardino County

Confirmed cases: 191,087 total, up 6,133 from Monday, averaging 3,254 reported per day in the past week

Deaths: 1,438 total, up one from Monday, averaging 7.3 reported per day in the past week

Hospital survey: 1,738 confirmed and 83 suspected patients hospitalized Monday, including 342 confirmed and 5 suspected patients in the ICU, with 24 of 25 facilities reporting. The number of confirmed patients is up 7.4% from a week earlier.

People tested: 1,636,522 total, up 9,343 from Monday, averaging 18,812 reported per day in the past week

Resolved cases (estimate): 170,000 total, up 8,804 from Monday, averaging 4,489 per day in the past week

Metrics tracked by the state:

    • ICU availability: 0.0% across Southern California
    • New cases per day per 100,000 residents: 165.5
    • Case rate adjusted for testing volume: 82.8
    • Test positivity rate: 23.0% (26.8% in socioeconomically challenged neighborhoods)
    • What that means: Southern California is under a stay-home order because of the low ICU availability. When that is lifted, San Bernardino County will return to a color-coded tier with restrictions based on the other metrics.
